It happened more than 40 years ago. It had barely just turned
August 1, 1965. Though early morning, the sky was still
dark. If lit, only by the mountains mystical see-through moon
and fiery stars. There were no street lights. It
happened on the highway. A US national historic highway.
The same soil the French and Indian war was fought - the same place
George Washington once stayed, US Route 40 East.
It happened just outside of Uniontown, PA. near a small town
called Markeysburg - Henry Clay Township - Fayette County. It
happened in the mountains. It happened just a bit down the
road from a bar - then named "The Brown Derby" - a mountain bar - a
good ole' boy bar.
According to the coroner's opinion on the death certificate the
accident occurred at 1:10am.
Gary C. Miller crawled up a steep, stony, pricker infested
embankment and lay under the guardrail. His left leg was
broken, his skull fractured. He lay in shock for nearly two
hours before Clyde Alexander decided to return.
